How far can a 2x8 joist span?
A 2x8 is one of the most common members in North American light framing, and "how far can it span" is one of the most common framing questions. There is no single number. A published span table gives a different answer for every combination of species group, lumber grade, spacing, load case and deflection limit, and for a 2x8 floor joist in a living area the values reproduced on this site run from 7 ft 3 in all the way to 15 ft 0 in.
This guide explains what drives that spread, shows the published 2x8 figures the site holds, and points you at the table page each one lives on. It is a preliminary-sizing reference, not a structural design. The values come from the IRC 2018 span tables transcribed elsewhere on this site, and the edition adopted where you build may differ - confirm every member with your local building official and a licensed design professional before you cut anything.
Five things decide how far a 2x8 spans
Every allowable span in a code span table is the answer to a five-part question. Change any one part and the number changes, sometimes by several feet.
Nothing on this page is a shortcut past that list. A 2x8 span quoted without all five is a number without a question attached to it, which is why the same size gets quoted as "about ten feet" by one person and "nearly fifteen" by another.
- Species group. Douglas Fir-Larch, Hem-Fir, Spruce-Pine-Fir and Southern Pine are assigned different design values, so they get different rows and different spans.
- Grade. Select Structural, No. 1, No. 2 and No. 3 describe how many knots, splits and how much slope of grain a piece is allowed to have. The grade stamp on the lumber is the only thing that tells you which row applies to the stick in your hands.
- Spacing. The on-center distance between members. Wider spacing hands each joist more floor area to carry, so it cannot reach as far.
- Load. Each table is written for one specific live load and dead load in pounds per square foot. The 40 psf living-area table and the 30 psf sleeping-area table are separate tables with separate numbers.
- Deflection limit. How much bend the table allows under load. The floor tables here are held to L/360, the ceiling joist table to L/240, and the rafter table to L/180.
2x8 floor joists in a living area
Living rooms, kitchens, hallways and other non-sleeping floor areas are designed for 40 psf of live load plus 10 psf of dead load, with deflection limited to L/360. That is IRC Table R502.3.1(2), reproduced in full on the 40 psf floor joist table page. Here is the whole 2x8 row at the most common spacing, 16 in on center.
The spread across that single row is close to five feet. A Douglas Fir-Larch Select Structural 2x8 reaches 13 ft 7 in; the same nominal stick in Southern Pine No. 3 stops at 8 ft 11 in. If you have been told "a 2x8 spans about thirteen feet", that is the strongest corner of the table being quoted as though it were the whole table.
Notice also that Southern Pine leads the group at Select Structural but trails Douglas Fir-Larch at No. 2. Species ranking is not fixed across grades, which is one more reason to read the cell rather than memorise a rule of thumb about which lumber is strongest.

Bedrooms, roofs and ceilings are different tables
The 2x8 under a bedroom floor is governed by a different table from the 2x8 under the hallway outside it. Sleeping areas are designed for 30 psf of live load rather than 40 psf, so the same piece of lumber is permitted to reach further. Rafters and ceiling joists move further still, because they carry a different load and are held to a looser deflection limit.

That is a difference of well over six feet between the shortest and the longest published span for a single nominal size in a single species and grade, driven entirely by load case and spacing. It is also why "can I use 2x8s?" cannot be answered until someone says what the 2x8s are holding up.
The rafter row is measured differently as well: rafter spans in the source table are the horizontal projection, not the sloped length of the member you actually cut. And the ceiling joist table published here covers attics with limited storage - an attic you intend to floor and load like a room is a floor, and belongs in the floor joist table instead.

What the span table will not tell you
A span table answers one narrow question: how far a repetitive member of a given size, species, grade and spacing may span under one specified load and one deflection limit. It is silent on most of what actually gets a floor built, and the silence is easy to miss because the number looks so definitive.
If your situation appears on that list, the table is a starting point at best. The answer comes from an engineer, or from a prescriptive provision your building department will point you to.
- Point loads. A bearing wall, a post, a beam pocket or a heavy tub landing on one joist is outside the table entirely.
- Bearing and connections. The table assumes adequate bearing at each end; hangers, ledgers and their fasteners are a separate design problem.
- Notches and holes. Drilling and notching rules limit where and how much you may remove, and a legally notched joist is still a weakened one.
- Openings. Stairwells, chases and skylights mean headers and trimmers, which are beams rather than joists.
- Cantilevers. A joist that runs past its support is not described by the clear-span number.
- Moisture and service conditions. The floor tables assume dry service. A deck is a wet-service condition with its own guide and its own tables.
- Built-up and sistered members. Two 2x8s fastened together are not "a 2x8", and this table does not cover them.

Whatever the table says, the last step never changes. Allowable spans depend on species, grade, spacing, live and dead load, and the deflection limit, and which edition of the code is in force is decided by your jurisdiction rather than by this site. Take your numbers to your local building official and confirm them against the locally adopted code edition before you build.
Frequently asked questions
Can a 2x8 joist span 12 feet?
In the 40 psf living-area table at 16 in on center, most Select Structural, No. 1 and No. 2 rows reach 12 feet or a little past it, while Southern Pine No. 2 stops at 11 ft 10 in and every No. 3 row falls well short. At 24 in on center, no 2x8 in that table reaches 12 feet at all. Read the cell for your exact species, grade and spacing rather than the headline.
Should I use a 2x8 or a 2x10?
Depth is what buys span. In every row of the joist and rafter tables published here, the deeper nominal size spans further than the shallower one at the same species, grade and spacing. If the 2x8 cell does not reach your clear span, the choice is a deeper member, a closer spacing, a higher grade, or an intermediate support - the size finder will show you which sizes reach.
Is a 2x8 rafter span the length of the rafter I cut?
No. The rafter table reproduced on this site publishes the horizontal projection of the rafter, not the sloped length of the member. On a pitched roof the piece you cut is longer than the number in the table, so comparing your cut length against the published span will make the rafter look undersized when it is not.
What if my lumber has no grade stamp?
Then you cannot use a span table with it. Every row in these tables belongs to a specific species group and grade, and the grade stamp is the only evidence of which row applies. Ungraded, reclaimed or unstamped lumber has no published design value, and your building official will not accept a span table as justification for it.
Do the same spans apply to a 2x8 deck joist?
No. Deck framing is a wet-service condition and is sized from a different table - the American Wood Council's DCA6 deck guide, reproduced on the deck joist table page. At 16 in on center it publishes a shorter span for a 2x8 than the indoor floor table does, and it also governs allowable overhang beyond the beam.
